George Bowles, an Umbrella Maker of Dublin

Back to The Bowles of Dublin

Wilson’s Dublin City Directory of 1820 lists a George Boles, Umbrella Maker, at 30 Capel St., Dublin.  This must have been a generation before the following George, his father or Uncle?  Note: Lower Ormond Quay starts at Capel Street.

The Freeman's Journal and daily Commercial Advertiser (Dublin) of Jan. 24, 1832 contained an advertisement for G. Boles Wholesale House at No. 1, Lower Ormond Quay, featuring shoes, boots, oil cloth, umbrellas of his own manufacture etc.

That same year, George had a bit of a problem with a tenant of his in a room over his shop which resulted in a death but George was not found at fault in the incident.  The Freeman's Journal published a full account of the coroner's report and the trial.

From the 3rd Report from the Select Committee on Fictitious Votes, Ireland, printed July 5, 1837, Appendix A (An alphabetical list of the registered voters for Members to serve in Parliament for the county of the City of Dublin, registered prior to the First day of February 1833) we also know that George lived at #8 Harcourt Street in 1832:

"B#651 Boles, George, umbrella manufacturer, 1 Lower Ormond Quay; house and premises, 8 Harcourt Street, house 1 Lower Ormond Quay; leaseholder; value: ₤10; date of registry 1832 Nov. 5"

Pettigrew & Oulton's Dublin Directory of 1842 lists Boles, George, umbrella and oiled cloth manufacturer and ladies' shoemaker, 1 Lower Ormond Quay.  That would have been at the corner of Capel Street and Lower Ormond Quay.  He's still at that location in the 1850 Thom's Directory of Dublin.  He is listed as a householder and boot and shoemaker at 1 Ormond Quay in the 1844 Jury Lists for the County of the City of Dublin so he also lived at that address.

There is also a Charles Bowles, boot and shoemaker and leather dealer at 1 Lower Ormond Quay in an 1846 directory.  That's too early to be George's son born in 1841 so likely Charles was George's brother.

Speculation:

Who would have been the William Boles who was witness at George's marriage in 1835?

This is the most likely William I can find who could be George's brother:

William Boles m. Catherine
(of 9 Usher's Lane in 1840)
1.  Bevan Boles bp. Aug. 9, 1840 St. Audeon, Dublin

Then there was the Charles Bowles who was a shoemaker at #1 Lower Ormond Quay with George in 1846 so it appears there may have been three brothers: George, William and Charles.

There was a  George Boles bp. Aug. 24, 1805 St Catherine's, Dublin (C of I) (parents: James and Mary Boles of MB (probably Mary Bone) Lane) but there's no indication that they had the other boys.  They are on record as parents of a Catharine (1804) and James (1808) as well but no sign of Charles or William yet.

I believe the following William Boles, MD may be another son of George's as he gave his father as "George Boles, Trader" on his marriage certificate.  To be a young MD by 1854 he would have to have been born in 1828 or earlier; if so he could be from George's first marriage although he may be one class level above George.

William Boles, MD b. bef. 1828
(at Clanbrassil Place in 1842;  at #1 Harcourt Street in 1852 (remember George Boles lived at #8 Harcourt Place in 1832 and was probably there until the 1850's;  lived 21 Upper Camden Street in 1854; surgeon)
m. Anne Murray (William, Gent.) July 7, 1854 St. Peters, Dublin
