(he was admitted as a Freeman at Large for Cork city, as the eldest son of John Boles, Gent, deceased, Jan. 9, 1754 (The Council Book of the Corporation of the City of Cork), that would have given him the right to trade within the city but it doesn't necessarily mean he was a merchant, it may just have been to market the produce of his own estate)
3.2.2  John Boles (an apothecary of Cork city with landholdings in Mallow and Cork city in 1760, 1771, 1773; at Charitable Infirmary in 1760; appointed by trustees of North Infirmary at £20 per annum as apothecary and stewart with house on site in 1771;  granted land at Mallow and Cork to Sarah Boles, widow, of Mogeely, witnessed George Bowles of Curriglass Esq. in 1773  ref.)
(this would be John Boles of Cork, Gent. of Ballysheehan near Mallow and that’s his memorial stone to his father, brothers and sisters in Clonmeen N cemetery ref.) the Catholic Boles living at Ballysheehan in the 1901 and 1911 censuses indicate that possibly there was a relation of John's who is not mentioned in the Boles family history, perhaps as he married a Catholic woman; he could be the source of the Catholic Boles line in this area; a little later on there was a John Boles, born about 1820, who married a Catherine Leahy (or Lee or Lyhane) and baptized five children in the Catholic church at Banteer between 1847 and 1858; the 1901 and 1911 censuses list those children living together at house #3 in Ballysheehan along with a cousin Denis Leahane; see The Catholic Boles Line in the Mallow Area)
