General Muster Books and Pay Lists

85th Foot Regiment,  1st Battalion (National Archives WO12/8812)

29th Feb 1780 – 24th Dec 1780, Captain George Munro’s Company, Up Park Camp Jamaica, Corporal Michael Bowles
Note: this is the earliest roster of the 85th which has survived.  The regiment of about 800 men had been formed the year before and arrived in Jamaica in 1780.  The conditions in the camp were so severe that the Dec. 24, 1780 muster shows that by that date, of those 750 to 800 men, in that 300 day period there were four officers and 165 non-commissioned officers and men sick in hospital and quarters and 2 officers and 130 men had died.  Michael's particular company had shrunk to the captain, the lieutenant, no ensign, 2 of the 4 sergeants (one of the two being the former Corporal Michael Bowles), 1 of the 4 corporals, 1 of the 2 drummers and only 25 of the original 70 privates were active at that point.  See also History of the 85th Foot

Note: Michael Bowles was in Captain John Mackay's company with Harrington as the 65th Foot regiment's Colonel.  Harrington also had his own company in the 65th Foot under a Lieutenant Captain and two Captains, although he remained in England at first under 'King's Leave'.  This company's muster includes a Private John Bowles, b. Britain.  I cannot identify him as any possible relation of Michael's.
