There seem to have been a couple of different unrelated Bowles families which settled in Artemesia township.
Samuel Bowles was born in Peel county, Ontario where he married and had 5 children. The family moved to Artemesia in 1879. From “Split Rail Country – A History of Artemesia Township” Pg. 286 “In 1879 Samuel James Bowels Sr. and his wife Ann (Morrow) and a family of 2 boys and four girls drove 4 head of cattle, seven pigs and a team of horses from Albion Township. They arrived at the top of Bowles Hill in the Fall of 1879. Mrs. Bowels came from the county of Mayo in Ireland in the year of the potato famine, arriving in Muddy York (Toronto) at the age of 11. She was hired as a domestic working for her clothes and food. She married Samuel Bowels Sr. when she was 16. At first they lived on a farm near Palgrave in Albion Township and their children were born there: Samuel James Jr., George, Barbara, Maggie, Kate and Martha.” Samuel James Bowles b. William Bowles, a tailor, arrived from England before 1833 and married Sarah Anne in Quebec where they had 4 children.
See a possible
record for them in Quebec City.
Between 1842 and 1849 they moved to Artemesia. The earliest records list this family as Bowles but later as Bowler and by the 1900's exclusively as Bowler.
