HENRY J. BOWLES

Henry J. Bowles, born 1855 at Franktown, Ontario, learned the photographer's trade before he left Sarnia in 1875. After a trip to Pembina and Fort Garry, he went to Wahpeton to help build the Northern Pacific. He returned to Pembina in 1882 and worked as a photographer for three years. He took a homestead in Beaulieu, sold it and went with W.J. mooney to Langdon before a house was built. A pioneer mail carrier, he traveled by stage coach and dog sled. He was operating a stock farm in the Rosa Lake area where he met and later married Elizabeth McGauvran McKercher, who as an 18 year old, homesteaded land in the Rosa Lake area eight miles east of Langdon. This land is stillowned and operated by a grandson, Jerry Bowles of Langdon. Henry and Elizabeth were married July 9, 1892 at Olga. In 1903 he bought the farm six mile north of Osnabrock which has since been the Bowles family home. Henry was active in Hay Township offices, a member of the Zion Evangelical Church since its establishment and was affiliated for 35 years with A.O.U.W. and I.O.O.F. He was director of the Cavalier County Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance for 12 years and an adjuster for the State Hail Insurance Department. Five children were born to the couple: Albert, Herbert, Walter, Horace and Dewey. His step-children were Vina, George and Arthur McKercher. Mrs Bowles died Sept 23, 1931 and he died May 22, 1944. He is buried in a plot contributed to Zion Cemetery from his home farm.--recorded 4/85
